Types of Solar Power System

Types of Solar Power System

On-grid or grid-tied solar power system

In on-grid or grid-tied type of solar system, the solar power generation system is connected to the electric utility grid.

When the consumption of power generated from solar exceeds that of produced solar electricity, home owners can then use traditional utility power source or the grid.

When solar power production is more than the consumption, then the excess solar electricity can be sold back to the utility company, thus making profit from selling the power. This process is called as net-metering. This is completely an automated system, and switching between the power supplies hardly takes any time and neither the user has to bother about power consumption.

On grid solar power system also comes with battery backup system, to store the generated power, as the power consumption and production time usually differs.

On-grid or grid-tied solar power system
Advantages of grid-connected solar power System
Generates passive income through the facility to export excess electricity to the utility company. Easier solar installation and ensures electricity even with lower solar power generation capacity.
OFF-GRID SOLAR POWER SYSTEM

Off-grid solar power system

In the off-grid solar power system type, the PV system is completely disconnected from the utility power grid. Storage batteries are required to generate and store power from sun, and use when required.

The excess power generated is only stored in the batteries and cannot be transported back to the utility companies like the grid connection. For prolonged excess power demand, electricity generators can be used as a power source to match up with the requirements.

Benefits of off-grid solar power system
Brings power to the remote areas, where traditional grid connection is not reachable. Uninterrupted power supply, even during power cuts.

Seasonal Tilt Solar System

Seasonal Tilt Solar system

Seasonal tilt ground mount structure optimizes energy output by maximizing total annual incident irradiation on the panel’s surface. Seasonal Adjustable table is a low-cost alternative to a tracker or fixed table that gives you the ability to quickly and easily optimize your array’s tilt to compensate for the sun’s seasonal changes. Seasonal Tilt, if done consistently produces between 15% to 25% more energy compared to a standard fixed array.

Seasonal Tilt Solar System

It is possible to have half A-frames that are manually tilt adjustable, so that in winter when the sun is lower in the sky the cells can be tilted up for greater exposure.

Solar Tracking System

Solar tracker system is a mechanised way that orients a payload towards the sun. Payloads can be photovoltaic panels, reflectors, lenses or various other optical devices.

In flat-panel photovoltaic (PV) applications, trackers are used to reduce the angle of incidence in between the inbound sunshine and a photovoltaic panel. This maximises the quantity of energy produced from a calculated load to take care of quantity of installed power generating capacity.

Trackers are used to get the maximum power by ensuring panel direction towards the sun and rip the benefit of green energy.

SOLAR TRACKING SYSTEM

In a ground installation a frame is built for your solar cells that tilts them up to an optimal angle (usually 30 degrees) and faces the correct way. The frame can be built out of galvanised steel or aluminum, and is attached to the ground via a concrete foundation. In many cases the frame will be a rigid half A frame like structure.

Where achieving the maximum possible efficiency is an aim (such as in commercial or very large installations).

Solar tracker is a component / tool / plugin in solar PV system which let the solar panels/arrays dealing with the sunlight straight or you can say at 90 degree angle regard to the sun-light. Simply puts “A solar tracker is a gadget that orients a payload toward the sun. Payloads can be photovoltaic panels, reflectors, lenses or various other optical gadgets.”.

In flat-panel photovoltaic (PV) applications, trackers are used to reduce the angle of incidence in between the inbound sunshine and a photovoltaic panel. This enhances the quantity of energy produced from a taken care of quantity of installed power generating ability.

In basic photovoltaic applications, it is approximated that trackers are used in at least 85 % of industrial installments higher than 1MW from 2009 to 2012.

The benefits of solar tracker are provided below :
Solar tracking systems are utilized to continually orient photovoltaic panels to the sun and can help make best use of the investment in PV system. They are useful as the sun’s position in the sky will alter gradually during a day and over the seasons throughout the year. Advantages to utilizing a tracker system like this will depend mostly on it’s positioning in determining exactly how well it will enhance the effectiveness of the panels. Energy manufacturing is at an optimum and energy output is enhanced year round. This is particularly significant through out the summer season with its long days of sunshine readily available to capture and no energy will be lost. For those with limited area this suggests that a smaller sized range only needs to be installed, a substantial advantage for those smaller sites with only a small location to put solar tracker. Contrast in between taken care of and with-tracking solar PV system.
Downsides:

Now let’s discuss about the drawback of solar tracking system. Today, with boom in solar technology, the use of solar tracker is not needed as it enhances the overall set-up cost of the system. The main downsides of using solar tracking system are as follows:

  • The stand alone PV home kit system is a very repturable and complicated source of energy manufacturing.
  • The panels do not move and require little upkeep.
  • By including a solar tracking system to your solar panels, you are including moving parts and equipments which will require regular upkeep of your solar system and repair work or replacement of busted parts.
  • The major disadvantage is, it require huge financial investment.
  • In Contrast to the expense and increment in the effectiveness, setup and upkeep expense of the monitoring system etc.
  • By utilizing the solar tracker the overall effectiveness of the system enhanced by 23-30 % whereas the system cost increases by 31-35 % (in many of the cases). Likewise the upkeep and fixing of mechanical and electronic parts of the monitoring system needs additional man-power and obviously additional financial investment.
  • we like to conclude that using solar tracker in the solar PV installation are not so much vital.
  • We can conserve this cash and put it on using the Maximum Power Point Monitoring which yields more output from the solar range than the tracker system.

What is a ground mounted installation?

In a ground installation a frame is built for your solar cells that tilts them up to an optimal angle (usually 30 degrees) and faces the correct way (North in Australia). The frame can be built out of Galvanized Steel or Aluminium, and is attached to the ground via a concrete foundation. In many cases the frame will be a rigid half A frame like structure.

Where achieving the maximum possible efficiency is an aim (such as in commercial or very large installations) it is possible to have half A-frames that are manually tilt adjustable, so that in winter when the sun is lower in the sky the cells can be tilted up for greater exposure.

Sun tracking installations are also available (where the cells rotate slightly throughout the day to follow the sun) and these are generally mounted on a vertical pole or beam (like a lamppost) to allow rotation.
